Update: Thank you to everyone who stepped up. We've just received news that Schumer's office has reached out to our partners at ReCreate to coordinate a meeting about CASE. It sounds like your efforts had an impact!

Subject: [mla-nynj] Urgent: MLA needs NY librarians willing to contact Schumer's office re: copyright legislation

Dear colleagues,

If you are a member of MLA you may recall a Public Policy Alert a couple of months back about S. 1273, the CASE Act. Briefly, this is a bill that if passed into law could potentially expose ordinary Americans (including the educators, students, and others we serve) to being sued for massive damages (up to $30,000) by copyright trolls without legal due process. MLA has joined the other major library associations (including ALA, ARL, AALL), organizations such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and the ReCreate Coalition in opposing this bill. You can learn more about the CASE Act here: https://www.mlanet.org/blog/take-action-to-oppose-the-case-act-of-2019<https://nam05.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mlanet.org%2Fblog%2Ftake-action-to-oppose-the-case-act-of-2019&data=01%7C01%7Candrew.hickner%40shu.edu%7C4b89bae7e01944759ded08d75e4171a7%7C51f07c2253b744dfb97ca13261d71075%7C1&sdata=NADZbWSlKbSiHzsqsGICJEaRYNeTnBPE1F7odJ5Uk60%3D&reserved=0>

The bill passed the House and is currently sitting in the Senate. We have been told that Sen. Schumer's office is interested in hearing from New Yorkers opposed to CASE (they have already have heard from some folks at NYPL).

If you live in New York and are willing to send a brief email to Sen. Schumer's office about this bill, please reply to me off-list, and I will follow up with you to provide contact info and sample wording. It will take just a couple of minutes of your time.
