Wish you could take your library's reference services to the next level? We invite you to join us on Monday, September 19th from 2:00 - 5:00 for Upping your Reference Game - Tools and Strategies for Value-Added Reference Services. Full description below. To register please visit http://metro.org/events/781/.
This half day, hands-on workshop will equip attendees with value-added strategies and techniques to enhance reference services and improve user satisfaction. The course will be divided into 4 major components: (1) teaching users to "fish" - cultivating research skills via email; (2) beyond the search - offering publication and scholarly communication support; (3) using response templates and web forms to save yourself time; (4) saving your budget - offering alternatives.
Each component will include lecture, demonstration, and hands-on exercises. Participants will leave the workshop with tools they can take back and use immediately in their day-to-day provision of reference services.
By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
* Employ strategies to enable users to be self-sufficient searchers
* Effectively utilize publication support tools to guide users in the publication process
* Create practical and flexible email templates
* Apply techniques to identify suitable alternatives when patrons request items for purchase
* Employ subject headings in a variety of capacities to improve reference services
* Demonstrate the ability to go above and beyond in providing high quality reference services
Laptops will be required for this course. Please let us know in your RSVP if you would like to use one of METRO's.
