JOB TITLE: Medical Librarian (9 hours per week)
DEPARTMENT: Health Sciences Library
The Library is in Elmhurst Hospital Center. Please be able to commute to Elmhurst, Queens which is 20 minutes from midtown Manhattan via the E, F, V, R, and 7 trains.

Works with the Library Director, Assistant Director, and Coordinating Manager to provide library services to the employees, students, and volunteers of the hospital, as well as general administrative support. Provides reference services including computer searches and bibliographic instructions to library users. Teaches groups of library users about evidence-based medicine. Assists in binding journals.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities (Competencies)
-- Answers patrons’ reference questions by finding books and articles on various topics and providing information about the library (hours, lay-out, policies, etc.). Teaches hospital employees and students how to use the library on their own. Frequently utilizes specialized knowledge based information in library systems and sources to locate difficult to find materials quickly.
-- Teaches evidence-based literature searching to groups of residents, nurses, and other hospital employees. Makes handouts for these sessions.
-- Uses databases to find articles that answer in-depth questions from Risk Management and other departments. Databases include, but are not limited to, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, PubMed, National Guideline Clearinghouse, Google Scholar, and Google.
-- Assists in binding journals, including supervising other part-time employees, scheduling, and other administrative aspects.
-- Provides backup for circulation, serials processing, and document delivery
-- Assists in other special projects as assigned
Knowledge, Education, Skills & Abilities Required/Preferred
-- Master of Library Science or be enrolled in a Masters of Library Science program
-- Superior skill in using the Internet to answer difficult reference questions
-- Superior skill in Microsoft Office suite
-- Excellent customer service skills
-- PubMed knowledge
-- It is strongly preferred that the librarian have experience conducting reference interviews and searching Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, National Guideline Clearinghouse, Google Scholar, and Google.
Working Conditions/Physical Efforts Required
-- Physically pleasant environment. Occasional physical work, such as shelving materials (lifting, bending, etc.).
-- Retrieval of material from storage room located in the sub-basement.
