Medical/Patient Library Internship
LIS graduate students are invited to apply for an internship with the Library Service of the Department of Veterans Affairs, New York Harbor Healthcare System—Manhattan Campus. The library provides professional service to a diverse, multidisciplinary VA staff and patient population, with access to a collection of over 4,000 medical texts, journals, audiovisuals (videos and DVDs), and consumer health materials as well as selected newspapers, magazines, audiovisual materials, fiction and non-fiction monographs.
Working with the Library’s Chief of Service, interns will have the opportunity to take part in daily library operations and work on ongoing short-term and long-term projects. Students will participate in a field experience designed to enhance their graduate course work, which may include, but is not limited to:
Providing reference service to staff, patients and families utilizing print and electronic resources;
Developing materials to support the reference service, as well as to promote bibliographic and information literacy instruction;
Involvement in collection development.
Completion of two semesters (6-12 credits) of graduate work in library information studies program is preferred, but not required. Please note that this internship is unpaid (completed for experience and/or academic credit) and may only take place during the VA Library’s Hours of Operation: Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM.
