Get Connected with Assessment and Accreditation at MLA '08

Submitted by David Nolfi, Program Chair / Chair Elect, Nursing and Allied
Health Resources Section

Mark Tuesday, May 20, on your MLA '08 planner! The Nursing and Allied
Health Resources Section, Hospital Libraries Section and other groups are
sponsoring two programs that focus on helping librarians to proactively
address two essential issues that impact their institutions, libraries, and
work: assessment and accreditation.

Connecting Libraries to Organizational Mission: Using Assessment to
Strengthen the Library's Institutional Role

May 20, 2-3:30 PM

This session will focus on how libraries can use assessment to strengthen
their roles within their institutions. If offers something for every type
of librarian, whether in a hospital library, general academic library, or
academic medical library. We are very fortunate to have three outstanding
speakers: assessment expert Peter Hernon, Jim Shedlock, of Northwestern
University, and Michele Klein-Fedyshin of UPMC Shadyside Hospital.

Assessment: A Different Way of Seeing and Thinking

Peter Hernon will explore how libraries can participate in learning outcomes
assessment in order to solidify the library's place in its organization.
Hernon was named the Association of College and Research Libraries 2008
Academic/Research Librarian of the Year, and is one of the foremost experts
in assessment in libraries. He has authored several books on library
assessment as well as outcomes assessment in higher education.

The Academic Library's Perspective on Assessment and Institutional Role

Jim Shedlock will examine using benchmarking and other methods to assess
library services and will offer observations and ideas on using assessment
to strengthen the library's position in support of institutional mission.
Shedlock is the Director of the Galter Health Sciences Library at
Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.

Quantum Physics and Hospital Library Assessment

Michele Klein-Fedyshin will challenge librarians to rethink their roles at
the most fundamental levels. She will discuss specific mechanisms for
hospital library assessment, how to demonstrate library support for the
bottom line, and implications of evidence based practice and Magnet status.
Klein-Fedyshin is the Manager of Library Services at UPMC Shadyside.

Sponsored by the Nursing and Allied Health Resources Section, the Hospital
Libraries Section, the Federal Libraries Section, and the Library Marketing
SIG.

Connecting Libraries, Nurses, and Accreditation/Credentialing Organizations
to Improve Patient Care

May 20, 4:30-6 PM

Health sciences librarians spend much time ensuring that their libraries
meet accreditation requirements. This session examines how librarians and
their professional organizations can shape accreditation standards as well
as how they can support evidence-based practice.

Four MLA members who have worked on the Magnet project have teamed up to
present three papers on a variety of topics that are highly relevant to any
librarian working with nurses or in a hospital.

Reconnecting Librarians with Nursing Accreditation: Key Results

Peg Allen, Pam Sherwill-Navarro, and Melody Allison will present the results
of a project to create evidence-based model standards addressing the role of
librarians and libraries in nursing education and practice. This model will
be shared with national accrediting organizations for nursing, with
recommendations for placement within existing standards and model rules.

Building a Bridge Between MLA and the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program

Melody Allison and Margaret Bandy will report on the success of MLA's
efforts to get the 2008 revision of the Magnet Accreditation Manual changed
to reflect librarians' essential contributions to the Magnet approval
process.

NAHRS and ANCC Magnet Accreditation: What's the Attraction?

Pam Sherwill-Navarro and Peg Allen will discuss their survey designed to
obtain information about knowledge based resources, library services, and
the role of librarians in facilities approved by the American Nurses
Credentialing Center Magnet Program.

The program will conclude with a play designed to help illustrate key issues
related to library support for evidence-based nursing:

Nurse Practice Court - A Play to Aid Nurses in Evidence Based Practice

Led by Sheila Hayes, a group from the North Atlantic Health Sciences
Libraries chapter will present a "courtroom drama" to illustrate two sides
of a nursing practice issue. The play helps librarians understand some
reasons nurses are reluctant or resistant to using hospital libraries and
services and will engage librarians to respond.

Sponsored by the Nursing and Allied Health Resources Section, the Hospital
Libraries Section, and the Outreach SIG.
