Remembering Bob Oakley

Dear GRC and Legislative Task Force Members:

I wanted to let you know that Professor and Law Librarian Robert (Bob)
Oakley passed away unexpectedly September 29th of cardiac arrest. Bob
was Library Director and Professor at Georgetown Law Center at the time
of his death. He worked closely with Medical Library Association (MLA)
in his role as Washington Representative of the American Association of
Law Libraries (AALL).

Bob worked with the five national library associations (MLA, ALA, ARL,
SLA, and AALL) in support of the Library Copyright Alliance (LCA),
formerly the Shared Legal Capability, to address copyright issues that
affect libraries and their patrons. Bob's extensive knowledge and
expertise in national and international copyright and intellectual
property law promoted greater understanding of the issues. He has given
reports at Joint MLA/AAHSL Legislative Task Force meetings and was a
featured speaker at MLA's Governmental Relations Committee Annual
Meeting Legislative Update.

A sought after speaker, Bob helped the library community to understand
the complexities of copyright law and put this understanding into
everyday practice. Executive Director Carla J. Funk, CAE, comments, "We
are saddened by Bob's death and will miss his wise counsel and expertise
on issues of great importance to the library community. Most
importantly, Bob was a wonderful person who was respected and loved by
all of us who were fortunate to know and work with him. He will be
sorely missed. On behalf of the medical library community, MLA extends
its deepest sympathy to Bob's family, friends, and colleagues."
