MLA News' Internet Resources or Technology Column

Some of you may have already seen a call for contributors and put off
contacting us. We still have several months' of columns to fill . . . .

Do you have a passion for a technology you've used in your library or
want to research and learn about? Have you been burnin' to share a list
of your favorite websites on a health topic or issue of interest to
medical librarians?

The MLA News' Technology or Internet Resources columns have openings for
authors in 2008. I've attached a list of past columns, but if it
doesn't come through, look to the very end of this message for the list.

<<Past MLA News Technology Column Topics _4_.pdf>>

What's required? Technology columns are just 700 words and Internet
Resources columns are 500 words. I would be happy to send you a couple
of examples if you don't have access to MLA News online:
http://www.mlanet.org/members/mla_news/
<http://www.mlanet.org/members/mla_news/> (member login required).

What's in it for you? In addition to the eternal thanks of Pat Weiss
and me - the column editors - you qualify for a "Bylined Contribution in
Newsletter, Points Awarded: 1 point" for AHIP membership or renewal.

Possible technology topics (or suggest your own):
- "Microblogging", what is it and how can librarians/libraries use it? (
Twitter
<http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com
%2F&ei=fXsyR9OHJouchQPFgrTiDw&usg=AFQjCNEO69xqmGBKEzvxFVM6hYomeXRGaQ&sig

<http://www.jaiku.com/> , Yappd <http://yappd.com/> )
- Institutional Repositories, who needs them/why would you want one?,
what's involved in providing one, what are the pro/cons? (www.dspace.org
<file:///\\www.dspace.org> or other homegrown options)
- Individualized login accounts like MyNCBI -- what sorts of features
are offered and what benefit do they provide to users? (we are looking
for a librarian at an institution with a wide selection of resources
that could review personal accout features for major vendor products or
someone who would be willing to request trial access to resources to
write this column)

- Electronic book options -- With the advent of Amazon's Kindle and the
Sony Reader, is it time to re-evaluate electronic books? Will the
technology have an impact in the health sciences? (see
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/06/technology/06amazon.html
<http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/06/technology/06amazon.html> for some
additional info).
-Infobuttons, What are they? Which vendors offer them (from the EMR side
and from the information resource side?) What standards are needed? How
can librarians be involved in planning and implementation?

-The "Semantic Web" -- what is it? How is it relevant to librarians? How
can medical librarians make their websites more compatible with semantic
web standards? (this article looks like a useful introduction --
http://www.technologyreview.com/Infotech/18395/page1/?a=f
<http://www.technologyreview.com/Infotech/18395/page1/?a=f> )

Possible internet resources topics (or suggest your own):
- Quit Smoking websites
- Flu Season websites
- Medical Tourism (what is it? and websites)

Now that you're considering volunteering -- here's the author guidelines
we'll ask you to follow:
For the Technology column:
- The deadline for submission two months before the publication date.
- Maximum length is 700 words.
- Remove or minimize first person style (ie. "you") while retaining
conversational tone. Columns should be more "academic" in tone, but not
too formal.
- Limit references, if any, to one or two. If multiple Web sites are
mentioned, we can create a sidebar.
- Check your style and references to see that they match MLA style.
(HTML and PDF versions at http://www.mlanet.org/publications/style/
<http://www.mlanet.org/publications/style/> ).
- By submitting draft articles to MLA News, authors accept that
manuscripts may be edited for length, clarity, style, and compliance
with MLA style.

For the Internet Resources column:
- The deadline for submission is 2 months prior to the publication date.
- IColumns generally contain a brief introductory paragraph and six to
10 URLs, with one- to three- sentence annotations each.
- Maximum length is 500 words.
- Remove or minimize first person style while retaining conversational
tone.
- Complete though spare sentences
- List organization name first, then site name as displayed in site
title (example: American Heart Association: High Blood Pressure Health
Risk Calculator).
- Alphabetize entries by organization, page, or website name.
- Double check to verify that site URLs still work.
- Remove http:// <http://> from front of URL. -- for example:
www.ada.org <file:///\\www.ada.org\>
- Limit references, if any, to one or two.
- Check your style and references to see that they match MLA style.
(HTML and PDF versions at http://www.mlanet.org/publications/style/
<http://www.mlanet.org/publications/style/> ).
- By submitting draft articles to MLA News, authors accept that
manuscripts may be edited for length, clarity, style, and compliance
with MLA style.

Let me know if you're interested in this great opportunity!
